Accommodation: how to choose and prepare?

Hello! 🙂

I hope that you are fine and that you spend your summer good and efficient.

Today we will speak about dormitories. We are not going to talk about every residence that you can apply for. We will talk about what possibilities exist

First read the information here carefully:

https://www.telecom-paris.fr/en/campus/campus-life/housing-and-dining

First of all, we talk about the three main options in the dormitory sector.

  1. CROUS accommodation

What is CROUS?

The CROUS, operator of the public service for student life, has for main missions. The main role of CROUS is to improve the living conditions of students, in particular by offering assistance to students in everyday life to facilitate the success of their studies. CROUS accommodation are normally not expensive. Also near to the CROUS dormitory there is normally a CROUS restaurant which is also inexpensive.

There are many CROUS residences located near educational establishments. There is a residence near Télécom (Jean d´Ormesson) and several not far from Télécom.

2. The International University Campus (Cité Universitaire)

Cité U gathering many residences. Telecom has partnerships with several houses where you have a good chance of living if you want. Cité U also offers many possibilities for sports, loisir and other aspects of intensive student life. Cité U is close to the RER station, which you will use to get to go to Télécom. The payment depends on the house (around 600 euros for the most part). More detailed information can be found on the site https://www.ciup.fr/.

3. Other students dormitory

Plus there are a lot of other residence where you can live. The list is given on the Telecom website.

What should you watch out for?

Position

  1. In Palaiseau

The advantages of living near to Telecom are obvious. In addition to being able to get up 10 minutes before the start of the course, it is also easier for you to participate in the student life of our beautiful school. If you don’t live within walking distance, you will need to leave any night no later than 11:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. But if you have the privilege of ‘walking’ – you are the king / queen of Telecom parties!

In addition, near Telecom, there are a supermarket Franprix, a BNP bank and a few restaurants.

2. Le Moulon

A little further on is the Moulon: 10 minutes by bus or 40 minutes on foot from Telecom. However, the infrastructure is poorly developed here. There are no shops, pharmacies or banks here. There is a Crous restaurant.

3. Cité Universitaire

CitĂ© Universitaire is located in Paris! If you want to explore this beautiful city, carefully consider this option. It has all the necessary infrastructure and good views from the windows. Time to Telecom – 45-60 minutes (! But keep in mind that there are often strikes in Paris, so the time can reach two hours!)

4. Others

To understand if the location is good for you, I advise you to use city mapper (https://citymapper.com/paris). This application will calculate the time to arrive quite accurately (when calculating, do not forget to indicate the time of arrival, for example, courses in Telecom start at 8:30 am). Also in google maps you can see things as important as “supermarket”, “pharmacy”, “shopping center”, “restaurant”.

Price

Prices looks too scary? Well, some of the money can be returned! This is done via the CAF (caf.fr). You must register on the site and provide the necessary documents. Once your file is approved, you will need to send copies of the documents by post.

By my own example, now I live in a residence, which costs 450 euros per month, 200 euros are returned to me.

In fact, on the caf website, you can simulate the payment and see the amount.

IMPORTANT! You must submit a request on the website within the first month of registering at the residence (most likely, it’s September). If you do this in October, your September money will not be refunded.

Le garant

Some hostels require a guarantor. You can use the Visale. The Visale guarantee, a service offered by Action Logement, offers all adult students, without income conditions, a free rental deposit for any type of accommodation. To obtain it, you must register on https://www.visale.fr/ to provide the documents and you will then receive a Visa. Very simple!

Studapart

In addition to residence, you can use the Studapart services https://telecom-paristech.studapart.com/en/ to find your ideal accommodation.
